Why Loving Everything on Pinterest Is Actually Holding Your Home Back

This might sound familiar…

You open Pinterest, start saving images, and before you know it, you’ve created a board filled with beautiful spaces minimal, classic, modern, bold and somehow, you love all of them.

But when it comes to actually designing your home…

you feel completely stuck.

As an interior designer, this is something I see in almost every first client meeting.

THE REALITY I SEE WITH CLIENTS

During our first meeting, we sit together and go through inspiration.

And almost every time, I hear:

“I love this… and this… and this too.”

Or I’m shown Pinterest boards filled with completely different styles all loved equally.

And the truth is…

this is completely normal.

You’re not doing anything wrong.

SO WHY DOES IT FEEL SO CONFUSING?

Because while each image is beautiful on its own…

They don’t necessarily belong together.

  • Different colour palettes

  • Different materials

  • Different moods

  • Different ways of living

And when all of these ideas are combined without direction, the result isn’t cohesive — it’s overwhelming.

PINTEREST IS INSPIRATION NOT YOUR FOUNDATION

Pinterest is an incredible tool.

It opens your eyes to possibilities and helps you discover what you’re drawn to.

But it doesn’t:

  • Understand your lifestyle

  • Know how you use your space

  • Consider your daily routines

And most importantly…

it doesn’t know YOU.

YOUR STYLE ISN’T JUST A LOOK IT’S HOW YOU LIVE

Your home should be designed around:

  • How you move through your space

  • What your day-to-day looks like

  • What makes you feel comfortable and at ease

  • What actually works for your lifestyle

This is what defines your style.

  • Not trends.

  • Not aesthetics alone.

  • Not what everyone else is doing.

WHY COPYING DOESN’T WORK

One of the biggest mistakes I see is trying to recreate a Pinterest image exactly.

But that image:

  • Was designed for a different space

  • For a different person

  • With different needs

So even if it looks beautiful…

It often doesn’t feel right.

WHAT GOOD DESIGN ACTUALLY DOES

Good design brings clarity.

It takes everything you love and filters it into:

  • A clear direction

  • A cohesive style

  • A layout that actually works

It removes the overwhelm and replaces it with intention.

YOU DON’T NEED TO KNOW YOUR STYLE IMMEDIATELY

This is important.

  • You don’t need to have everything figured out.

  • You don’t need a perfect vision from day one.

  • But you do need guidance to bring it all together.

FINAL THOUGHT

The goal isn’t to have a home that looks like Pinterest.

The goal is to have a home that feels like you.

If you’re feeling stuck between multiple ideas or unsure how to bring your space together, I offer 1:1 design consultations where we work through your layout, style, and direction with clarity and purpose.
